Shoe spikes, also known as crampons, provide valuable support on icy trails or when crossing snowfields. But beware of cheap offers: Not all models are suitable for alpine use—and some even pose a safety risk.
In the EU, shoe spikes are classified as personal protective equipment (PPE) and must be CE-certified. However , beware: The requirements for this certification are only designed for use as anti-skid protection on black ice and say little about their actual suitability in alpine terrain. A CE mark alone is no guarantee of quality or safety!
Therefore: Stay away from cheap products on the internet. For alpine tours, only high- quality, proven brand-name products are recommended – ideally from established manufacturers with alpine expertise.
