Last month, the traditional Advent hike on Monte Lussari near Tarvis took place, bringing together hikers who wanted to start the Advent season in the mountains rather than in the busy valleys below. The group set off in the early morning hours, ascending together toward the well-known pilgrimage church on Monte Lussari.
From the beginning, conditions reflected the season. While lower sections of the trail were partly snow-free, higher up the path quickly turned icy and snow-covered, especially in shaded areas. These changing conditions highlighted the importance of spikes (micro-crampons) as part of a winter hiking setup.
Winter trails require extra traction
Although the route to Monte Lussari is technically easy, winter conditions can make it challenging. Hard-packed snow, icy traverses and frozen ground demand reliable footing. Many participants used spikes to maintain grip and stability, allowing them to move confidently and safely along the trail.
